If you grew up with Lego in the '80s, you probably spent most of your time building spaceships and castles. Lego is celebrating its 90th birthday with two new sets that will be impossible to resist for anyone who has played with Lego for a long time.
The Lego Lion Knights' Castle is seven times larger than the original Lego King's Castle and is the most detailed and complex medieval build Lego has ever created.
The Lego Lion Knights' Castle can be either a self-contained structure or spread open to show an equally detailed interior with bedrooms, kitchens, a dining hall, and even an armory. Castles were built to protect themselves from invaders. A drawbridge, a trap door, a water wheel, thatched roofs, and greenery can be found on the outside of the Lion Knights' Castle. There are over 20 minifigures, including knights, wizards, forest people, blacksmiths, and a cow.
There are a few themes that can claim to be part of the brand's enduring popularity, but what really made Lego the icon it is today was the space theme, particularly the 318-pieceGalaxy Explorer set that was released in 1979. It was packed with features that hadn't been seen in Lego sets before.
The original Galaxy Explorer has been resurrected as a new 1,246 piece set that carries forward the original blue and gray color scheme as well as the retro yellow canopies. The ship has the same design as the original, but it has more detailing and greebling. The extendable ramp that can be used to deploy a rover can also be used to access the living compartment. Four minifigure astronauts in red and white suits are part of the newGalaxy Explorer.
Pre-orders will start on June 18 for $100 and general availability on August 1st. Pre-orders for the general availability of the Lego Lion Knights' Castle will not be taken until August 8th.
