Too Hot

Thousands of cattle are dying in Kansas because of the heat. According to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, at least 2,000 head of cattle died in the southwest part of the state.

A video that has more than 35,000 views claims to show 10,000 dead cattle in a barren, waterless feed lot. They waited to be shipped to slaughter houses before they died. Many people in the comments took the minute-long clip very seriously.

I have been living in Kansas since 1982 and have been involved with farmers and cattlemen for most of that. This is the first time I've seen something like this before.

Some pointed out how cruel it was to leave animals out in the sun.

Hotter Still

The temperature went from the 80s to the 100s this week.

One of the top cattle counties in Kansas was Haskell County. The soil temperature was 92 degrees four inches below the surface because of the heat and dry conditions.

As climate change gets worse, the heat is likely to stay. If the deaths continue, beef prices won't go up. Climate change and inflation may cause the price of beef to go up permanently.

At a time when we already have higher prices, all that potential beef was wasted. All of the feed and water was wasted and harmful greenhouse gases were released when they were grown to this size. At least they'll be useful.

The police say people Hacked gas station pumps to make the price go down.
