The dominance of former President Trump in the Republican Party is not as strong as it used to be.

High-profile losses in Georgia, Nebraska and a key South Carolina district have left Trump-backed candidates with a mixed record in GOP primaries.

The work of the House select committee puts Trump's involvement in the insurrection in the spotlight.

Trump leads early polls by a lot. There is no guarantee that Donald Trump will run. He will face a serious challenge if he does, according to Republicans.

If the GOP nominee is someone other than Trump, who would it be?

There is a new governor in Florida.

At this point, DeSantis is Trump's most serious rival.

The Florida governor has a lot of different appeals. Conservatives liked his fight against vaccine mandates during the Pandemic. He has advocated for legislation that liberals dubbed the "Don't Say Gay" bill.

In a GOP primary, the fact that DeSantis sparks ire from left-leaning voters is likely to be an asset.

There is more to it than that. He had over 100 million dollars in his reelection fund.

Some people close to Trump think that DeSantis would be hesitant to face the former president because he would be scared off.

He is the epitome of the kind of candidate who would have a realistic chance of defeating Trump.

The former vice president was a Republican.

The spotlight is on Pence this week.

The hearing on January 6 was focused on Trump and his attempts to get the election overturned. The man put his life in danger by resisting.

It could be a problem in a presidential primary if Pence sticks to his guns on that issue. The most fervent Trump supporters won't easily forget what they see as a betrayal on Jan. 6.

It will be a challenge for the GOP to win back the White House because there are never pencers out there. I don't believe it is impossible.

Others don't think he can get over the hurdle.

One conservative leader saidence is a waste of time. He was a great vice president, but no one supports him. He's the choice of the donors.

In recent months, Pence has distanced himself from Trump, saying that he was wrong to think he could overturn the election and campaigning for Brian Kemp.

He has deep roots in the religious right. He doesn't know how far those assets would take him.

The former United Nations Ambassador.

There is no doubt that Haley, who was twice elected as South Carolina's governor before becoming the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, has her sights set on higher office.

She has been seen as a rising star. She was the first woman to serve as governor of the state. She was seen as an example of how the GOP could reach beyond its base.

Matt Mackowiak is the chairman of the Republican Party in Texas. She does that in a way that is convincing. Both Haley and Pence have lines about being conservative but not being in a bad mood about it.

Haley's political judgement has been questionable at times and she is distrusted in parts of Trump World.

She was very critical of Trump in the immediate aftermath of the insurrection, saying that he went down a path he shouldn't have and we shouldn't have followed him.

She backed off after coming under fire. She said she wouldn't run in 2024 if Trump ran.

Cruz is a senator from Texas.

Cruz finished second to Trump in the 2016 presidential election.

He could benefit from the GOP nominating someone who is next in line. It might be possible.

Cruz is a conservative who is popular with his supporters.

He has a habit of making people feel uncomfortable. Lindsey Graham joked years ago that if Ted Cruz was killed on the floor of the Senate, no one would convict him. Graham apologized afterwards.

Many of the former president's supporters still view Cruz's speech at the RNC as a betrayal.

Cruz is a fierce competitor and knows what it takes to build a presidential campaign.

He is up for reelection in four years.

There was a former Secretary of State.

It seems clear that Pompeo wants to be the next president.

Within a couple of months of Biden taking office, he was visiting Iowa and helping raise money for a Republican in New Hampshire, traditionally the two first to vote states in the primary process.

If the political discussion turns to foreign affairs or national security, he has plenty of experience to point out.

Skeptics think that Pompeo doesn't possess charisma. He hasn't run for statewide elected office. He served three terms in the House before becoming the CIA director.

He is the heir to the Trump legacy, as he was responsible for most, if not all, of his foreign policy agenda. I wouldn't underestimate MikePoe.

Scott is a senator from South Carolina.

If Republicans want a nominee who can unite the pro-Trump and Trump-skeptical wings of their party, Scott could be a real contender.

Conservatives like Scott's record and personal story, and political opponents like him personally. He is the only black Republican.

Scott and Sen. Booker worked on police reform proposals for months in 2021.

Doug Heye is a former communications director of the Republican National Committee. He is a different kind of person.

People have bad things to say about Scott. Is he really interested in running for president?

He would be as happy going back to private life as he would be walking the West Wing.

South Dakota's governor is Noem.

Noem came to national attention when she said that "more freedom, not more government is the answer."

The summer of 2020 was when she supported the motorcycle rally. The event drew a lot of people, but it was linked to the Covid-19 outbreak.

If Noem were to run for president, she would be one of the most ostentatious candidates in the field.

The former president held out hope that Noem would challenge the incumbent senator from South Dakota. The GOP primary was won by Thune.

Noem doesn't have much experience on the national stage. South Dakota is not an easy state to start a presidential campaign in.

Moderate Republicans warn againstunderestimating Noem's star power and appeal to the grassroots.
