Ms. Marvel is the best-reviewed series in Disney Plus's MCU, and is just 1% away from being the highest scoring show or movie.
Early reports show that the Disney Plus series is not as popular as other series. It was reported that 775,000 households watched Ms. Marvel in its first five days.
The report says that Gen Z and Black, Hispanic and Asian households watch more TV than other households. The show isn't good. However...
Most of the other shows were based on existing, high profile characters in the MCU and their attached stars. Ms. Marvel doesn't have a backup like CaptainMarvel.
Iman Vellani is the lead actress and she is completely unknown. In Disney's other new hero series, Moon Knight, the main role was played by OscarIsaac, a blockbuster-caliber actor.
It is clearly aimed at a younger crowd, and draws a lot of parallels with the young adult books. It is unfortunate that you will get some measure of existing fans believing that this is not for them, since it is enjoyable regardless of what generation you are from.
Disney insists on putting both of them out the same day, which could be hurting its ratings, since none of the other MCU series were put on top of a Star Wars show.
All the pre-release trailers didn't do a good job of packaging the series. While I was planning to watch it, the trailers didn't assure me of its quality, and it wasn't until the reviews started rolling in that I thought it had captured lightning in a bottle.
Is it important for Ms. Marvel that she gets a lot of viewers? I am not sure if it is true that the plan is to give her a prominent part in The Marvels next year, which is the next step for her character regardless of how the show does. She is expected to be a core part of the new team that will be built in Phase 4 here, similar to Kate Bishop, despite Hawkeye not being renewed for season 2. It is clear that there is a plan behind the scenes.
Even if more people watch the show, they will see how great it is, and how great Iman Vellani is. As the show goes on, we will see if these numbers increase.
