We wrote about a 130K welcome offer for the American Express Business Gold that is available via certain referral links in some browsers. We had never seen a bigger offer on the Business Gold.
There were reports of a 180K welcome offer being sent to certain Amex cards. The 180K had the same language as the 130K, meaning that if you had been a Business Gold member for at least 4-7 years, you were not eligible for the welcome offer. Without a mailer, there was no way to find out if you were part of the offer.
Doctor of Credit says that you can find out if you are eligible over the phone, and that some people are getting an offer for an additional 10K Membership Reward by adding an employee card. I was able to get access to the 180K offer, but not the +10K one.
Ask for the 180K offer if you want to check eligibility. It will need to be done over the phone.

American Express® Business Gold Card The card is expensive and has few perks. If you use at least one or two 4X categories, keep. There is an annual fee. The Amex pay over time card has a card type. You can earn 4X on the two categories where your business spends the most each billing cycle. 4X applies to the first $150,000 in combined purchases, 1X point per dollar thereafter and on other purchases. The terms are applicable. After you pay with points for flights with your chosen airline, you will get 25% points back. The rates and fees are applied. |
This would be the biggest welcome offer we have ever seen on the Business Gold, and one of the largest on a Membership Reward-earning card period. Is it better than the 130K referral offer.
I chose the 130K offer instead of the 180K one. There's a reason. Spending on the card is doubled over the course of six months. You have to spend twice as much for the 130K referral as you do for the $10,000 requirement, which is reasonable.
This would be amazing. In comparison to the 130K offer, I am spending an extra $10,000 for 50,000 Membership rewards. I can sign up for the 130K offer using a household referral that will give me another 15K for a total of 146K.
3.5x MR earning is nice, but with all of the other gaudy "No Lifetime Language" offers on both flavors of Platinum and Gold, I'd rather put that additional spend towards a second welcome offer and be earning 10 I would rather spend that $10K on one of my current Ink Cash cards and take the 50,000 Ultimate rewards instead.
The opportunity to earn 3-6x on $10K in spend seems ho-hum, but that is where we are.
I knew I had the option of taking the 130K offer. If I hadn't been able to get the phone rep to offer me the 180K, I wouldn't have given it a try. If you haven't had a Business Gold in the last 4-5 years, it's a good idea to call.
It's the DOC.
