In order to convince the U.S. government that it will not expose the personal information of Americans, the Chinese-owned video app TikTok said on Friday that it was moving all of its data through a Silicon Valley company.
TikTok said that it would keep its own backups of that information.
The app, which is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, said in a post on its website that it would eventually remove American users' private data from its own data centers and move it to the US. It wasn't clear when that would happen.
In order to better safeguard our app, systems, and the security of U.S. user data, we have been working with oracle for more than a year.
The video app made its announcement before the article was published. Employees of TikTok said that Chinese engineers had access to American data as recently as this year, according to recordings obtained by the news outlet.
According to TikTok, they have brought in world class internal and external security experts to strengthen their data security efforts. In May, the company created a unit in the United States that would focus on data security for Americans.
ByteDance was ordered by Donald J. Trump to sell TikTok because it could expose the personal information of Americans to Beijing. The White House was rumored to have reached a deal to sell part of the app to other companies. The Biden administration continues to scrutinize opportunities for Chinese companies to control American data.
A spokeswoman for the White House did not reply. The Treasury Department is a member of the committee that vets foreign investment in the US. The company did not comment.
