Almost all of the American population can soon be protected against Covid-19 disease thanks to the authorization of Pfizer and Moderna Inc.
The clearance by the FDA allows the use of Pfizer's three-dose vaccine for youngsters ages six months through 4 years, made with German partner BioNTech, and Moderna's two-dose vaccine for children six months through 5 years. Moderna's Covid shot was approved by the FDA for children and adolescents. Pfizer's vaccine was the only one available for this group.
It has been over a year and a half since vaccines became available, and an authorized vaccine will be good news for parents who haven't been able to get their kids shots. The vaccine was delayed when a two-dose regimen didn't evoke an adequate response
The vaccines for the youngest of kids are expected to be available in June. As soon as the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention approve the vaccine, Pfizer and Moderna will supply 10 million doses.
Government programs and medical groups will educate the public about vaccinations. The shots will be available through a variety of locations once they are fully cleared by the FDA and CDC.
The health officials have warned that the rate of hospitalization and death for children, particularly during the omicron wave, has been concerning.
The CDC Director said during a Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions that Covid is one of the top killers of children. Walensky said that the deaths from Covid have been higher than the flu deaths.
The shots for kids will be the topic of a meeting held by the CDC. The Advisory Committee on immunization practices advises the CDC on how to administer new vaccines. Before vaccines can be administered, Walensky needs to sign off on any recommendations.
