The UK government gave the go-ahead on Friday to extradite the founder of the website to the US.
The UK's decision was approved by the home secretary. The 14 day period to appeal is according to the BBC.
The Home Office said in a statement that the courts in the UK found that extraditeting Mr. Assange wouldn't be oppressive, unjust or an abuse of process. He will be treated well in the U.S. despite the fact that he would be incompatible with his human rights.
After the U.S. won an appeal, the UK's High Court ruled that he could be extradited to the U.S.
After failing to surrender to the court, he was arrested at the Ecuadorian embassy in London and held in a high-security prison. The country withdrew his asylum after he was accused of violating international conventions. After being accused of sexual assault in Sweden, he was granted asylum in order to avoid being extradited.
In the U.S., he is accused of espionage over the publication of classified government documents in 2010 and 2011.
"This is a dark day for press freedom and for British democracy," said the statement published on the social networking site.
The story is evolving.
