McIlroy: 'You'd take 67 on this golf course any day' (1:15)

He was happy with his opening-round performance and explained how he lost his cool. There is a break between 1:45 and 1:45.

It might be a coincidence that the best golfer in the world is playing at a time when the new series is threatening the tour.

The new circuit is fronted by two-time Open winner Greg Norman and funded by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.

After grabbing a share of the first-round lead at the U.S. Open, he insists he's motivated by something.

Eight years have passed since I won a major, and I just want to get my hands on one again.

The opening-round 3-under 67 put him in a good position to do that. He started the tournaments with a round of 67 or better in each of his four previous majors.

It's nice to feel like you're in the tournament from the beginning. I'm going into Friday with the mindset of let's keep it going, rather than where it is. Those thoughts start to build if you don't get off to a good start. When you get off to a good start, you have to keep going.

At the golf course outside Boston, it was a busy day for the golfer. He shot a 2-under 33 on the back nine. He hit his tee shot on the fifth hole. The ball was very rough above the Bunker.

"You're going to encounter things at a U.S. Open, whether they be lies or something like that, that you just don't really encounter any other week," he said. "It's hard not to get frustrated because I'm walking up there and I'm just coming back into the Bunker." There is a thick rough around the edges of the Bunker. I cursed at the USGA whenever I went up to the ball.

His feet were below the ball. He was able to hit his second shot into the fairway Bunker. He slammed his club into the ground. The golfer got up and down out of the sand to save par.

"I gave the sand a couple of whacks because I'd already messed it up, so it wasn't much more work for Harry," he said. I played a decent shot and then holed that putt. You have to accept the things that you don't normally see in the other weeks of the year, but you have to try.

On the par-4 ninth, he lost his cool after making a double bogey on the previous two holes. He threw his club in anger after pushing his shot to the right. The man made a bogey.

On the fifth and ninth holes, he said his reactions were almost to remind himself how much it meant to him.

"You just have to be so precise and so exact at this golf tournament, whether it be hitting the sand on 5 or the club throw on 9," he said. You're putting yourself behind the eight ball if anything goes wrong. The margins are so fine in this tournament that you can see it in some of the reactions.

While the emergence of LIV Golf and the defection of several top PGA Tour players inspired him to play better golf, that's exactly what he has been doing the past few weeks.

Last week, he won the Canadian Open. His 21st victory moved him past Norman in career victories. He's trying to become the first player to win a major after winning a tour event.

The strongest voice of support for the PGA Tour right now is from Northern Ireland, and that's because of the man, who is named James.

I am just being me. "I am living my life." I'm trying to play the best golf I can and doing what I can. I was not told to be here. I was not trying to be in this situation. I'm not trying to be anything else.
