Aw yeah, that’s... one... run-of-the-mill strap.

There are swappable straps for any modern watch. It is no surprise that a number of strap options are being worked on by the company. The one showcased during the I/O keynote is one of at least seven straps that the company will make for the upcoming smartwatch.

A Milanese-style mesh band, two types of leather bands, a link bracelet, a fabric band, and a silicone band are all being worked on by the search engine giant. It is said to be working on a stretchable option that is similar to Apple's solo loop. It is possible that it is taking several pages out of Apple's book. We don't know much about the Pixel Watch's specifications, but from what we know, they're trying to take the Apple Watch head on. It is possible to offer similar strap options.

Whether they are smart or analog, watches are expressions of personal style. The Pixel Watch won't reach a wider audience unless there is a wide range of choices. A standard 20-22mm strap would be the safest thing for the company. Customers could use mechanical or analog watches with many of the stylish options that were available.

Is this a Pixel Watch or one of several other smartwatches that look exactly the same? (It’s a Pixel Watch)

That is not what it is doing. We saw in the sizzle reel that it would be using its own straps. Either Google is quite confident in the designs it is putting forth, or we are about to see some really ugly or uninspired smartwatches bands from the people who brought you the Pixel 6 cases.

When it comes to straps, Apple has generally whiffed it. Most of the gadgets are not as attractive as theirumber brethren. The Horween leather straps are from the fitness tracker. I don't want to say those leather. They would love to have Apple's leather link band back. I don't want to talk about the monstrosities that are in the watches. Silicone straps are good for workouts, but not great for formal occasions.

If you search Amazon, third-party accessories for Google products aren’t teeming with stylish options

I think third-party accessory makers could be used, but going with a proprietary strap means that is not certain. If you search for accessories on Amazon, you won't find much. Not many people are buying enough devices to justify the investment. You will end up with roughly 7,000 results if you run an Amazon search. You can find over 100,000 results if you search for an iPhone case. 190 results to over 10,000 results for the Pixel Buds, compared to over 10,000 results for the AirPods. Customers are more likely to find something they like if you have a lot of options. These are eyesores when there are slim pickings.

Performance and Wear OS 3 are going to be the most important factors when it comes to deciding if the Pixel Watch is good. Enough people have to think that they will pay premium prices for that to matter. It would be wise for the company to make sure the straps they put out match those of their competitors. It's just making sure that the Pixel Watch won't impress us.
