Amsterdam's Schiphol airport said passenger numbers would have to be slashed by around 13,500 seats per day because of a lack of security staff.

Schiphol has told airlines that it will artificially limit the number of passengers allowed to pass through the airport. The measures will remain in effect until the end of the month.

Passengers will end up missing their flights if capacity is slashed at the airport.

Many travellers would miss their flights if they didn't intervene. The airport said that it would lead to unsafe situations.

Dick Benschop is the chief executive of the airport. The majority of travellers will be able to travel in a safe and responsible way now that a limit has been set.

The capacity cap means that airlines may have to cut services.

The scenes of chaos that have plagued Schiphol in recent weeks are a thing of the past, but artificial capacity caps are highly detrimental, according to a statement from the airline.

I was important to give passengers clarity as swiftly as possible so I would begrudgingly cooperate with the capacity cap.

The maximum number of passengers that the airport can handle will be capped at 67,500. In August, the airport hopes to have more security staff online and increase its capacity.

The number of seats needs to be reduced by 13,500 per day. Existing bookings won't have to be canceled on a large scale.

Two weeks ago, bad weather and emergency runway repairs meant that the Amsterdam airport was already at capacity and couldn't handle any more passengers.

There is a risk of disruption during the summer season. There are a lot of problems at immigration border crossing points.
