The New York Times reported that the Department of Justice is investigating the formation of alternate slates of presidential electors for Donald Trump as part of a plan to undermine President Joe Biden.

A team of attorneys who were working for Trump are the focus of the investigation.

The grand jury in Washington subpoenaed people connected to the plan to put forward alternate electors, according to the newspaper. They wanted to know about Giuliani, Ellis, and another Trump lawyer.

CNBC requested a comment from the DOJ on the report.

The certificates were sent from seven states that Biden had won, including Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, New Mexico, Nevada, and Pennsylvania. Biden won the electoral college and those slates were never honored.
