The toxicity on social media is caused by Brian Windhorst saying anything that a few people don't like. It is so toxic that it is nearly radioactive. Those of you who went where you know you shouldn't have criticized Windhorst, I hope that makes you feel better.
What he said after the Golden State Warriors defeated the Boston Celtics was not right. It wasn't that he changed his words He just said something strong. He tried to defend as complimentary, but then he was dismissed.
The Warriors spent money even though they didn't win a game in the last couple of years. Draymond Green signed a new contract. The Currys re-signed. They agreed to re-sign Kevon. There was a boy who did it tonight. He was a throw in in a trade. Other teams would have taken him away.
Windhorst praised the Warriors for being loyal to their veteran players, and had faith in a player that many had quit on, and it paid off in a huge way. Windhorst went a bit too far.
They held onto him. When you consider taxes, they have a payroll of over $300 million. If you want to beat the Warriors on the court, you have to beat their pocketbook. This was a win for the Warriors and they were able to pay for it.
It was really bad.
Is Warriors owner Joe Lacob spending a lot of money on his team? It's definitely possible. The Warriors are a big-market team but no one thought of them as one until he bought them. They paid Curry $37 million, Durant $30 million, Thompson almost $19 million, Green $17 million, and Iguadola $16 million in the last year. Curry made $46 million, Thompson was close to $38 million, Andrew Wiggins was close to $32 million, and Green was close to $24 million.
It is the type of spending that makes small-market MLB and NBA fans complain, but these leagues make a lot of money. It will cost you if you keep these players on the roster.
What happened was discredited by the title of the book. The Celtics have the better team according to most basketball fans. There isn't enough evidence to change that opinion. The Celtics can be used in many different ways. The Warriors have stayed focused in important spots more often than their younger opponents. It's not as if the Warriors bought their way to the NBA finals this season.
Windorst appeared on the Bay Area radio station to defend himself.
Windhorst said that he was giving a compliment to the Warriors for being able to stick with their rebuild. Co-owner Peter Guber and co-owner Joe Lacob have done a great job in financing the team. It's not a level field.
Windhorst didn't know how the hosts or anyone else would react to what he said on Tuesday night. I disagreed with one of the hosts, Joe Shasky, who said that it sounded like Windhorst was carrying the water for the owners who don't want to pay the luxury tax.
Windhorst should own the phrase because it was going to upset some people and it was a great button to use. If one of them had never made an all-star team before this season, he wouldn't have been able to have the game of his life. People are not required to take it that way. He can't tell people what to think of his words.
If he were to own the phrase and explain it the same way he did on the radio, he wouldn't have a problem.
It doesn't excuse those of you who didn't like what he said. He said that both can be true.
