At least eight people were killed and scores of others were injured in a crowd surge at the Astroworld Festival in Houston.
There was a mass casualty incident at 9:38 pm. Houston Fire Chief Samuel Pea told reporters that 50,000 people were at the festival at the park.
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said at a Saturday news conference that 25 people were taken to the hospital and 13 are still there. The 10-year-old is critically ill. Pea said there were many injuries. He said at least 11 people suffered cardiopulmonary arrest.
Scott responded to the fatal concert.
We know about the mass casualty incident at the festival.
The victims ranged from 14 to 27 years old. Someone's age was not known. Turner said family members of six of the eight people who died have been notified. The victims will be released to their families before the autopsies are done.
The causes of death for the eight victims were not confirmed by the officials who spoke.
Around the time that Scott took the stage the surge started.
Pea said that the crowd began to compress towards the front of the stage and that caused some panic.
There were fires and shootings before the Astroworld Festival.
A field hospital was set up to treat many people at the scene. Pea said that about 300 people were examined there.
The fire chief said that the Astroworld promoter had medical personnel and an emergency transport component at the festival, but they were quickly overwhelmed.
People at festivals are usually happy to be there, according to Amy Harris. She's taken pictures of 10 or more concerts over the last 12 summers.
Harris said that she felt this aggression from the crowd all day and that it put her on guard like she did last year.
She said there was enough room for the crowd in the park. Many people tried to get as close to the stage as they could.
Harris said it made him very anxious.
The Who concert that left 11 people dead was remembered by Astroworld.
Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said during the overnight news conference that investigators did not have identifications for many of the injured.
Police officers and security officers were assigned to the festival. When the festival gates opened on Friday, there was a problem with people pushing past security. The situation was brought under control and unrelated to the tragedy.
The help line was announced by Turner on Saturday.
The governor of Texas directed the Department of Public Safety to assist with the investigation.
The Astroworld website states that the festival was sold out. Saturday's show was canceled as well.
The promoter of the Astroworld Festival said their hearts were with the family. We want to support local officials, however we can.
Scott said that he was devastated by what happened.
He said he would work with the Houston Community to help families in need.
The festival has hosted music for the past two years. According to the festival's website, musicians and artists who were scheduled to appear included Young Thug and YSL.
Drake and Scott performed together at a concert that was streamed on Apple Music.
The surge seemed to happen all at once, according to Houston Police Executive Assistant Chief Larry Satterwhite.
Satterwhite said that they had several people down on the ground, experiencing some type of cardiac arrest or some type of medical episode. The promoter and Live Nation agreed to end the show early in the interest of public safety after I met with them.
Finner said that authorities were looking into reports of suspicious activity in the crowd, including a security officer who told medical examiners that he felt a needle in his neck during the chaos.
He was resuscitated by Narcan.
Scott and the event promoter cooperated with police, according to Finner.
Since the 2003 Station nightclub fire that killed 100 people in Rhode Island, the most non-shooting deaths at a U.S. concert have occurred.
A concert by The Who in Cincinnati in 1979 left 11 people dead and two dozen injured as fans tried to get into the coliseum.
