Woody: The Bucs better watch out for the Saints this season (1:27)

They debated how much of a threat the Saints will pose to the other teams in the division. There is a time and a place for it.

6:00 AM ET

There was a plan in place for the practice field.

When the veteran receiver was talking to reporters about why he chose to sign with the New Orleans Saints, he noticed that quarterback Jameis Winston was the only one left on the field.

I don't think anyone else is out here. The last one is this man. "That's who he is, that's who I am." That is something you would like at that position and part of your team.

He's a leader. The intent of the conversations was to put behind what he was saying.

He is going into his 8th season. If you think this is a make-or-break season for the former No. 1 overall draft choice, you're wrong.

When the Saints tried to trade for Deshaun Watson, who is facing 24 civil lawsuits for inappropriate behavior and sexual assault during massage sessions, they considered replacing Jameis. Everything they have done since has made them even more committed to Winston, as he recovers from a torn leftACL he suffered in October.

He was signed to a two-year deal by New Orleans. In the first round of the draft, the Saints traded away their first-round pick in the 2023 draft class for wide receiver Chris Olave and left tackleTrevor Penning, who were both drafted in the first round.

Jameis has the tools to succeed.

• Chiefs' Chris Jones has DPOY on mind

• Dolphins' front seven determined

• Panthers' Anderson stands by Darnold

• Titans' Simmons not practicing at camp

Throw in the expected return of All- Pro receiver Michael Thomas from the ankle injury that wiped out his entire 2021.

"This team that we're building is electric, so I'm just excited about that"

"I'm happy for the opportunity that was presented to me, and I look forward to really building on that opportunity and taking advantage of it," saidWinston, who stressed how meaningful it is for him to head into this summer without being in a daily competition for the job as he was

It is more important for him to get regular practice reps with his teammates than it is for him to have a status symbol. He was quick to insist that he was always going to be in a competition, even though he said it was meaningful for him to have a certain type of ownership.

When you see the picks that we have, it's promising. It feels good not to be in a competition.

Seven months after having surgery to repair his knee, Winston has been practicing. He will wear a protective brace throughout the season. He is limited from some activities, like rolling out to make a play, because he is not yet participating in full team drills.

The quarterback insists he is ahead of schedule and is doing everything else on the field.

He said he is happy to take things slowly. He didn't want to miss out on spending time with his teammates because he said that was what he missed the most last season.

Over the past two years, a long line of Saints teammates have spoken about how much they love their teammates.

The man is the one. I'm happy he's our Q He's a great guy, a great quarterback, a great leader. He's going to have a great year.

There is a chip on his shoulder. He wants to be the best. A lot of us in this locker room think that way.

The infectious energy and leadership presence of Winston was praised by both Dennis Allen and Pete Carmichael Jr.

During his first five seasons in the league, the turnover issues that plagued him during his first five seasons in the league were a problem.

The balance last year was very close. During his time as a starter, he threw 14 touchdown passes and had a career high passer rating. His next contract will be a big hit if he keeps up those ratios.

In his six complete games, the Saints relied heavily on their defense and some conservative offensive game plans, as well as completing less than half of his passes.

Those numbers should be boosted by the improvements at wide receiver and the health of the offensive line. He wants to improve his "intermediate accuracy" in the offense that will feature Thomas, Landry and pass-catching running backs.

There are some good signs on the field. In the early stages of recovery, he was limited to short and intermediate throws.

He has worked hard this off-season getting ready to go and being a big part of communicating and sharing his thoughts about how he sees things. He knew what it would take to win those games when he played. There were things that we are going to grow from.

He did a good job in his preparation and he is a great team guy.
