An expert on authoritarianism told Insider that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis could be the GOP's natural successor to Donald Trump as president in 2024.

The author of Strongmen: Mussolini to the Present is Ruth Ben-Ghiat. From the US to Russia, she's studied the backsliding of democracy.

She told Insider that in light of the January 6 hearings, Trump may have to be prosecuted in order to save American democracy. She said that he could become a populist nominee.

According to Ben-Ghiat, prosecution is one of the only things that deflates personality cults because they are built on the idea that they are impervious. If that happens to Trump, DeSantis has already absorbed all the lessons of him.

Several essays have been written by Ben-Ghiat.

Whether it's in 2024 or later, he's ready for a national run. Ben Ghiat said that he is a very dangerous person. He doesn't have the baggage of Trump and is dangerous. It's difficult to have the baggage of a man.

The "Don't Say Gay" bill is one of the bills that DeSantis has signed recently.

The Stop WOKE Act restricts the discussion of race. The Office of Election Crimes and Security was instituted by him.
