Gary Bettman says the NHL will make more than $5 billion this year. It could be conservative.
The NHL completed its first regular season in two years, and commissioner Gary Bettman praised the league and its partners. That gave the groundwork for a financial recovery.
Bettman said that they have done the basics of their business. National media revenues increased in the US. The buildings are back to where they were with attendance. The last time we had normal playoffs, the first two rounds generated almost all of the revenues. We continued to watch NHL hockey. The business was stable and the power was through.
The NHL is expected to keep growing. He said the start date for the next season would be in October.
According to Bettman, revenues are expected to grow at a healthy rate. I think it will take two or three years to pay off our debt. I don't think I can do a good job of projecting next year or the year after that until we get a fix for this year. Things are very strong.
Increased scoring around the league is tied to higher revenues being generated, according to the Commissioner.
Bettman thinks it's related to increased interest in the game. If the game is healthy on the ice, everything we do is unimportant. The game is enjoyable. It gives us incredible races in the regular season, and it gives us playoffs that are as unpredictable as you can say.
The league's positive returns were not the only thing addressed. The NHL's response to the lawsuit was the most pressing.
Hockey Canada's World Junior team and eight Canadian Hockey League players are being investigated by the NHL for their alleged involvement in the sexual assault of a young woman. The discontinuance was filed with the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.
According to the NHL, the alleged behavior is both abhorrent and reprehensive.
"We're getting started," he said. We've been in contact with the association. We expect to be able to interview each of the players on that team because of the cooperation they have shown. We have also been in touch with Hockey Canada.
The NHL wasn't aware of any allegations at the time.
He said that they were aware of the lawsuit when they heard about it.
The legal matter with Evander Kane is still being resolved by the NHL. In January, the NHL Players' Association filed a complaint on Kane's behalf after he was placed on waivers by the San Jose Sharks.
Kane was in the fourth season of a seven-year, $49 million deal, and was going to lose over 20 million dollars from his contract being terminated. He spent the second half of last season with the Eskimos.
Due to scheduling conflicts, a resolution to Kane's issue may not be reached before free agency opens on July 13
During the month of June, the arbiter is not available. Some dates have to be worked on early in the summer. Evander's status is currently being discussed with the players' association. I don't know when the case will end. I think it will be past the date of free agency if it goes to the second day of hearing and the person who wants a written award doesn't get it.
The NHL will have won the cup. Russian-born players won't be allowed to take the hockey's trophy home due to the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The Cup won't be going to Russia or Belarus this summer. We might owe a Cup trip in the future, just like we did with the Pandemic. It isn't happening this summer.
