For Facebook and its parent company Meta, pride and Envy are just a way of life. The company is obsessed with being at the top of the social media ladder.

According to a report by The Verge, Facebook is on its way to becoming more like TikTok, which is owned by China-based Byte Dance. The new Discovery Engine will give users much more content from outside their accounts and pages, according to a leaked memo.

The platform tries to focus on content shared by friends and family. The face of social media is changing and they need engines that help people find and enjoy interesting content regardless of whether it was produced by someone you're connected to or not. According to the document, the company wants to focus on connecting people, and the new feature will help people connect via shared interests or identity.

Stories and Reels will be at the top of the page in the main app, according to reports. The groups will be renamed toCommunities and the page will focus more on short-video content that plays to the viral format that encourages younger users to use the platform.

Messenger will be integrated with Facebook and appear in the top right portion of the app if the proposed changes are approved. The new feed hasmesaging-based sharing in mind. The two apps were separated in order to make them faster to use.

A big part of this move is Reels, which was already integrated on Meta-owned platforms. The platform has been throwing money at content creators they hope will tear people away from their TikTok feeds, but with Facebook's current format, the company is realizing it can never be as addictive. One of their previous priorities has been replaced with something else.

Facebook has had a hard time navigating its algorithms

What does the new design mean for Facebook? When he announced changes to the platform in the fall of last year, he wanted it to go back to friends and family sharing awkward vacation photos.

It is rare for those at the top of Facebook to speak to the press, but Tom Alison, the head of Facebook, said that Stories was the main way people interacted in any positive way.

Alison said that Facebook is trying to bring you the best content that is going to really cater to your interests but then making it easy to share that and discuss and connect with other people in your network over that.

The feed has not been positive. The leaked Facebook Papers show how the company maximized the amount of time spent on the platform, no matter how employees feel about it. Alison said that the company wants to have a cleaner and easier-to-use experience.

It seems like a step backwards for Facebook to focus on artificial intelligence for people's feeds when it already has a problem with filters. According to a report, TikTok's moderators have been through a lot trying to shut down violent content. Thanks to its focus on showing user's content based on preferences, the app is able to reliably display false information.

Facebook’s need to stay relevant

As the platform has come to prominence, Facebook has been trying to get in on the act. TikTok has become one of the most popular platforms in the world because of its ad revenue. The company is said to have hired a GOP-linked consulting firm to make their competitor look bad.

User numbers show that the short-form video format is effective. In a few months, the shorts have grown from 1 billion monthly users to 1.5 billion, beating out TikTok's 1 billion. Meta isn't going to run out of money any time soon, but the lack of growth this past quarter has made the company want to do something different.

Facebook is afraid of its future prospects if it keeps doing what it is doing. For the first time in its history, Facebook lost a million users in the first quarter. The current downturn makes investors hesitant to invest in Meta's projects.

Short-form video is in, according to reports. According to a recent report, Facebook may end its contracts with the biggest news outlets in order to make more money from TikTok-esque videos.

Every social platform wants to be the best for everyone. TikTok wants to be similar to the video game streamer. They want to be like TikTok. The social media site wants to highlight novel content. Until the big tech homunculus is too big for anyone.
