There was a feeling that the fifth episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi was going to take things to a whole new level from the very beginning. The siege that was inspired by Empire Strike Back was filled with intense action, but really shined thanks to the psychological warfare between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader. If you were like me, you could see the Padawan tail on the person's head. As soon as you saw this, you knew it was him from the previous movies. Even though he looked a little older, the episode began with a scene of Obi-Wan and Anakin having a battle. The episode would later show that this was more than just a fight. The duel that was part of the failed Jedi trials was used as a parallel story to explain the actions of our two main characters.
That was the first thing that came to my attention. One might think that this memory was from Obi-Wan's perspective. Vader stood on the bridge of his ship and thought about his master. Reva told Vader that she had placed a tracker on the Jedi. His trip down memory lane paid off. As a reward, Vader made her the Grand Inquisitor.
After fleeing there after his confrontation with the Inquisitors, we once again saw Haja, but he is no longer there. Before everyone can escape, Vader's ship arrives and the base is sabotaged. They're stuck. Looking back at his battle with Anakin, he knows that he won't hesitate. He thinks they can use their advantage by attacking at full speed.
With the refugees trapped and the Empire mounting a ground assault on the base, I couldn't help but think of the battle of Hoth, which tracks with the excellent online theory that each episode of Obi-Wan is directly inspired by a Star Wars film. If this is Episode V, The Empire Strikes Back, someone has to fix some wires and things to get people to escape and there will be a big revelation. When Obi-Wan talks to Reva, he learns she is a double agent. She doesn't want to serve Vader. She wants to get revenge on Vader for her family's deaths.
It is now confirmed that the main Youngling in the series was Reva. The reveal was not easy, but it was great. Reva doesn't want to kill Vader, but she does want to. There is a dark side to her. She shames Obi-Wan for not going to the Jedi Temple. She didn't save her friends The two of them are on the same side.
Reva used her lightsaber to cut through the door in order to do what she should have done. The battle between Reva's Stormtroopers and the refugees was the most intense blaster battle we've ever seen. Even though Obi-Wan is there with his lightsaber, there were blasters going off and people grappling. As the Stormtroopers got closer, Tala and NED-B began to take fire. The woman is badly injured. NED-B uses himself as a shield to prolong her life, as Obi-Wan tried to save her. She decided to use a thermal detonator to kill all the Stormtroopers and also herself. I felt like the character was gone too soon after we learned more about her past in the show.
The episode goes back to the battle with the survivors seemingly trapped. Obi-Wan and Anakin can both predict what the other will do, which is what Obi-Wan decides to exploit. He knows Vader wants him to surrender. He hopes to draw the Sith Lord into a situation that he doesn't suspect. The plan seems a little silly at first, especially when he gives Haja responsibility for not just Leia, but a little communication with the biggest secret in the universe. He will soon lose his communication skills.
He surrendered to Reva so she could kill Vader as she wanted. Reva left Obi-Wan alone with two Stormtroopers as they waited for Vader. The guys were taken out by Obi-Wan and he escaped. Vader chases after him and when he gets to the hangar, he uses the Force to hold the ship back. It is a powerful moment of force. He will rip through the ship to look for his master. We know that Obi-Wan is ahead of him. The real ship made its escape after being fooled by that decoy.
Reva made her move as Vader realized he had been defeated by Obi-Wan again. Vader is anticipating it. He praises her for her plan but she has been caught red handed. If you can call it that, Reva attacks Vader with her blade while Vader blocks and dodges. He stole her saber, split it in two, and gave her a chance at a battle. It doesn't go well either. Vader defeated her quickly and revealed that he knew she was the Youngling from the temple. I wonder if I was the only one who thought he was going to do a Dooku decapitation?
The original Grand Inquisitor came back thanks to him having two stomachs and Vader leaving her for dead. Is she? A wounded Reva crawls along the ground and finds Obi-Wan's important communication device. She can hear the words from the message sent by bail Organa. Obi-Wan knows something is not right. He is able to sense it. The ship he is on has a damaged hyperdrive and the Empire on its tail. There is a return to Tatooine. A boy is sleeping in his bed.
There was always a sense of holding back when I was a fan of Obi-Wan. Something was going to happen. It could have been this. I think this episode was better than all the others combined. It was good to start with the welcome fan servicey moment of seeing Anakin and Obi-Wan back in their Jedi days and then use that as an explainer for the mental chess match the two are playing. Reva was the one who turned against Vader. It was too early for Tala to sacrifice. The action was simply amazing. Is it possible for Obi-Wan to finish everything in one last episode? I would have said no.
