The white 18-year-old who shot dead 10 Black people at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, has been charged with 26 counts of hate crimes and firearms offenses by federal prosecutors.

The Justice Department charged Gendron with 10 counts of hate crimes resulting in death, three counts involving bodily injury and attempt to kill, and 10 counts of use of a firearm to commit murder and in retaliation to a crime of violence.

Gendron could be sentenced to death for the firearms charge.
