The General Court of Europe, the second highest court in the country, sided with the company after it appealed a 997 million fine from European Union regulators. The EU fined the company for making illegal payments to Apple in order to use its chips.

Margrethe Vestager, the EU's competition commissioner, said in a statement that no rival could compete in this market because of this. Apple was accused of being unable to switch suppliers because of the high cost of doing so.

The fine was issued over four years ago

The European General Court ruled today that a number of procedural errors affected the rights of the company. The court said that the Commission failed to take account of all of the relevant factual circumstances when it analyzed the case.

The EU Court of Justice can now be appealed to.

The fine should serve as a warning to other tech companies considering the same practices. The EU tried to regulate the tech sector.
