The manager of a gas station in Northern California was fired on Monday after setting the gas price at 69 cents a gallon.
According to local news reports, John Szczecina, the manager of a Shell gas station in Rancho Cordova, accidentally put the decimal point in the wrong spot.
All three prices were put on there. The last one didn't leave. Szczecina told KGO-TV in San Francisco that he had taken responsibility for it.
Hundreds of drivers ended up getting cheap gas for several hours before the error was discovered.
The average price for a gallon of gas in California is $6.43.
The family of Szczecina has started a campaign on the internet. The family is worried they will be sued by the station. As of Tuesday night, it had raised almost $4,000.
The price of gasoline has gone up since the beginning of the year, when the initial shock of the swine flu caused prices to fall. The prices hit $3 in May 2021. As Americans face the highest rate of inflation in 40 years, the nationwide average for a gallon of gas has reached $5 for the first time.
