A former Secretary of Education wants the president to stop his student loan forgiveness plans.

Betsy DeVos, who served in the Education Department under former President Donald Trump, told a conservative radio show on Tuesday that she didn't think Trump had the authority to cancel student debt, and she hopes Biden will follow the law.

"What we're really talking about is benefiting those who don't need it, and that's what we're talking about when we say we're going to forgive student loans," she said. Those who have never attended college, taxpayers who didn't take out student loans, and people who have faithfully paid their taxes are the ones who are going to pay for it.

It is a matter of fairness. I don't think it's fair to just give student loan forgiveness.

The Vice President announced on June 2 that federal student loans would be canceled for people who attended Corinthian Colleges.

The announcement of Biden's plan to forgive $10,000 in student debt for federal borrowers making under $150,000 a year will likely happen after August 31, according to reports. Many Republican lawmakers have slammed broad forgiveness of student loans, saying it would hurt the economy, cost taxpayers and benefit those who need it the least.

The college scorecards that show potential costs and earnings for a particular field of study are included in the income-based repayment plans.

"So, there's a lot of tools for students to use, and I would encourage all students to do that as they're doing their due diligence," said the Secretary of Education.

Income-driven repayment plans have been flawed for a long time. While the idea of the plans is to give borrowers affordable monthly payments based on their incomes with the promise of loan forgiveness after at least 20 years on repayment, an NPR investigation revealed in April that student loan companies were failing to track payments borrowers made on the plans, pushing them far off the forgiveness

Targeted student-loan relief for borrowers defrauded by for-profit schools has been criticized by Biden's education department. The relief, known as borrower defense to repayment, was supposed to discharge debt for those borrowers once they submit a claim, but ran up a huge amount of claims that resulted in a denial rate.

Many Democrats want Biden to go big on student-loan forgiveness to benefit those who need it the most. An arbitrary number of relief won't do, according to New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

She said that a halfway approach is not much better than nothing and resources are better spent elsewhere. People can experience the benefits of a policy if they are pushed.
