A chilling announcement greeted the attorney for Alexei Navalny when he tried to visit the imprisoned Kremlin foe on Tuesday at Pokrov.

According to a social media post, authorities said there was no such convict here.

The news that Navalny was missing immediately raised concerns about his safety, since he is a critic of Putin. Even before the Russian president invaded Ukraine, his challenge to the Kremlin was seen as a threat.

Sergei Magnitsky died in a Russian prison after exposing Kremlin corruption. Dadin described the treatment of prisoners. Dadin wrote in 2016 that he was unlikely to hold out for more than a week.

The Russian security services tried to poison Navalny. He recuperated in Germany and then went back to Russia, where he faced arrest on a fake charge.

He was sentenced to 9 years after Putin invaded Ukraine.

Navalny's attorneys try to visit him on weekdays to make sure he is alive and well.

Anna Veduta is the vice president of the Anti-Corruption Foundation and she says that the rule of law doesn't apply to Navalny.

Neither his attorneys nor his relatives were informed about his transfer, according to Navalny spokeswoman Kira Yarmish. There were rumors that he was going to be transferred to the high-security penal colony IK6 'Melekhovo', but it is not certain when or if he will actually arrive there.

The Navalny camp did not confirm the news of a transfer to the prison in Melekhovo, according to Yarmish.

The penal colonies east of the Ural Mountains are not as remote as Melekhovo, which is further east. In the farthest reaches of the empire, prisoners were allowed to commit abuses without being monitored.

High-profile critics of the Putin regime are often brutally punished in the Russian Penal colonies.

Veduta told Yahoo News that they didn't have any contact with Alexei. The people who tried to kill him in the first place are still in control of him.

The transfer of prisoners in Russia can be very long and very ruthless.

Valery Sergeyev, a prison reformer, said that the disappearance of a person from the field of view of relatives and rights workers is scandalous.

Veduta said that sometimes people die on the road. Get brutally tortured. There is no supervision.

It isn't a transfer to cheer for Navalny's fans. Veduta said that the colony is known to be one of the toughest and torturous in the country.
