May 1 was the deadline for players to enter the transfer portal if they want to play in the 2022-23 season.

Big moves have been announced since the last iteration of the women's college basketball Way-Too- Early Top 25. Expectations of what Kim Mulkey can do in her second season in Baton Rouge were raised by the fact that Angel Reese committed to the LSU Tigers. Saniya Rivers, a former Gatorade Player of the Year in high school who spent her freshman season with the South Carolina Gamecocks, has decided to continue her college career at NC State.

Adia Barnes and Sonya Morris were both recruited by the Texas Longhorns, but Sonya Morris decided to join the Arizona Wildcats.

NC State and LSU were the biggest risers. The Georgia LadyDogs entered the top 25.

1. South Carolina Gamecocks

Next: 2

The reigning national champion spent the entire season in the top spot. A few reserves sought new homes via the transfer portal, but as long as Aliyah Boston is in Columbia, the USC are the team to beat in 2022-23. Kierra Fletcher joins from Georgia Tech, Victaria Saxton is returning for a fifth year, and Raven Johnson is expected to return from a season-ending knee injury.

2. UConn Huskies

Next: 3

Expectations are high for a squad that is hoping to field a healthy Paige Bueckers and Azzi Fudd after losing several players to the NBA. A wrist injury that Dorka Juhasz sustained in the regional final against NC State could be an X factor in determining whether this team can achieve its goals. The University of Connecticut has a small group of newcomers, with Ayanna Patterson and Ice Brady ranking fourth and fifth, respectively, among 2022.

3. Stanford Cardinal

Next: 2

One of the worst games of last year was in the national semifinals. The chance to repeat as national champion was lost with the loss to Connecticut. The departure of guards Lexie Hull, Lacie Hull and Anna Wilson made up the core of the grit factor. The talent that is left is amazing. One day, Haley Jones and Cameron Brink should be a part of the NBA. Both Brink and Betts are imposing twin towers. The Pac-12 will once again be a strong contender.

4. Tennessee Lady Volunteers

Next: 7

The Lady Vols won the transfer portal competition with a group of players that included Rickea Jackson and Jasmine Franklin. Tennessee has the talent to build upon last season's promising start, in which the program achieved its best ranking in the AP poll.

5. Texas Longhorns

Next: 3

Texas has a player you don't want to take your eyes off, because she always seem to make something happen. She was a part of the Longhorns team that won the Big 12 tournament for the first time in a decade. For the second year in a row, they made theElite Eight. They will be going to the Final Four for the first time in eight years. The way could be led by the Matharus. Sonya Morris and Taylor Jones are transfers.

6. Iowa Hawkeyes

Next: 6

The Hawkeyes know what's going on. They can score in bunches with the help of guard Caitlin Clark and post player Monika Czinano, who were Division I leaders in scoring and field goal percentage. Can they make it to the Final Four for the first time in 20 years? The challenge is that they were upset in the second round of the NCAA tournament last season. The Hawkeyes could have gotten to the Sweet 16 with one more stop. Iowa isn't going to be a great defensive team, but an improvement on that end and some additional scoring threats should make the Hawkeyes strong contender in the Big Ten and nationally.

7. Louisville Cardinals

Next: 10.

Jeff Walz overcame the loss of Dana Evans to lead his defense to the program's first Final Four appearance in two years. He will have to retool his team with the departures of some of his best players. The No. 13 recruiting class in the country was brought in by bringing in a pair of Atlantic Coast Conference guards in Morgan Jones and Chrislyn Carr. As an upperclassman she will be expected to take the next step in her game.

8. NC State Wolfpack

The previous day was 12.

Saniya Rivers, one of the top recruits from the class of 2021, was added to the NC State team. On top of that, there were commitments from River Baldwin from Florida State. Wes Moore has a track record of successfully incorporating transfers into what he's doing in Raleigh. NC State's ceiling in an increasingly competitive conference will be determined by how well his newcomers acclimate and how much responsibility returners such as Diamond Johnson and Jakia Brown-Turner step up with.

9. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Next: 6

The Irish missed out on an Elite Eight appearance in March, falling to NC State in a regional. The Irish return the majority of their biggest contributors from last season, except for Maya Dodson, who ran out of NCAA eligibility, while adding some intriguing faces via the transfer portal. Two star sophomores, as well as a graduate student, will pave the way for what could be the best group since taking the helm in SouthBend.

10. Iowa State Cyclones

Next: 9

A program-record 28 victories and a run to the Sweet 16 made 2021-22 a success for the Iowa State men's basketball team. The Bluejays knocked them out of the NCAA tournament, just like they did to their rival Iowa. It still hurts a little. Almost all of the things that made Iowa State great return. The case for the best player in the history of the program will be strengthened by the fact that she is a senior next year. Lexi Donarski was a defensive player of the year in the Big 12. Emily Ryan is a great point guard How good will Soares be at DI? She could be a big boost for Iowa State as they try to win a Big 12 title.

11. Virginia Tech Hokies

Next: 15.

With the departure of Aisha Sheppard, the Hokies have solidified their spot as a potential front-runner in the conference. Since our previous top 25 rankings came out, Taylor Soule has committed to Boston College, where she was one of the top two scorer. The team has the talent and college basketball experience to make its first Sweet 16 since 1999.

12. Indiana Hoosiers

The previous day was 11.

We expect the Hoosiers to contend in the Big Ten after entering a different realm in the last few years. Leading the way among returners is guard Grace Berger, who is the top scorer in Indiana in the next two decades. Indiana has become a program thanks to both of them. Sara Scalia, a guard at the University of Minnesota, shot 41.3% from 3-point range last season.

13. North Carolina Tar Heels

Next: 11

In 2006 and 2007, the Tar Heels made back-to-back Final Four appearances, but they haven't been back since. They made the Sweet 16 last season but lost to South Carolina in the final. Teonni Key is a top 10 recruit who missed last season because of a knee injury and is the younger sister of Tennessee's Tamari Key.

14. LSU Tigers

Next: 23.

Kim Mulkey's first season as LSU's coach was a success, as the team finished second in the SEC. The season was a success despite the loss to Ohio State in the second round of the NCAA tournament. This team will look very different than the one that was led by seniors. Four freshmen come in and are joined by five other people.

15. Ohio State Buckeyes

The previous day was 15.

Despite being co-champions of the Big Ten with Iowa, the Buckeyes went under the radar. Ohio State pushed Texas in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. The team's top two scorers are junior Jacy Sheldon and senior Taylor Mikesell, and guard play should be very good for the team. The most important question is how much they will make from their posts.

16. Oklahoma Sooners

The previous day was 13

The fun was back in Norman as the new coach at Oklahoma brought a high- scoring style. Taylor Robertson could become the NCAA's career leader in 3-pointers if he does that this season. Llanusa missed most of last season because of a knee injury, but she can be a big contributor if she is healthy. The Sooners bring in some size with their freshman class and add another 3-point shooter in junior Aubrey Joens.

17. Baylor Bears

The previous day was 20.

The Bears will have a new look in the 2022-23 season with NaLyssa Smith, Queen Egbo, and Jordan Lewis all going to the NBA. Helping compensate for Smith's absence will be the return of three of their six top rotation players, plus some big names from the transfer portal. As she tries to make her mark in her second year after taking over for Kim Mulkey, she will bring in her first real recruiting class.

18. Maryland Terrapins

The previous day was 16.

The transfers of Owosu, Reese and Collins made Maryland a different place. A group of five transfers, including a former Florida star and an Ivy League player of the year, plus a four-person freshman class, were added by Frese. In order to uphold the tradition of excellence, Frese has a tall task in front of her, but she has done it before. She can rely on the experience of last season's squad of Diamond Miller, Shyanne Sellers and FaithMasonius.

19. Arizona Wildcats

Next: 18.

One player who averaged more than 15 minutes per game was the only one who entered the transfer portal for the Cats. In the meantime, Adia Barnes got to work in the portal, bringing in Lauren Fields from Oklahoma State and Esmery Martinez from LSU. As Arizona looks to rebound from an up-and-down season last year, they have a strong group to surround them.

20. Oregon Ducks

The previous day, 18.

The only remaining player from Oregon's top-ranked 2020 recruiting class is Te- Hina Paopao. Kelly Graves will be getting reinforcements with the addition of Taya Hanson from Arizona State and the addition of Chance Gray and Grace VanSlooten. In her final season with the Ducks, Sedona Prince will be expected to take on more responsibility than before.

21. Creighton Bluejays

The previous day, 25.

The team that took down Iowa and Iowa State in the first round of the NCAA tournament will not be coming back. Lauren Jensen, who was named to the All-Tournament team, is one of the players who will be back. Expectations will be high for Jim Flanery's squad both within the Big East and beyond, where they will seek to take down Connecticut for the first time in their history.

22. Nebraska Cornhuskers

The previous day, 24.

Andy Markowski was a basketball player for the University of Nebraska in the 1990's. She was the Big Ten freshman of the year last season. A top recruit in volleyball and basketball will be joining the Nebraska team.

23. South Dakota State

Next: 22.

The WNIT title was won by the Jackrabbits after they lost the Summit League final to South Dakota. South Dakota State has played in the WNIT six times and is the favorite to win the Summit this season. The Jackrabbits added a transfer from Utah who led the conference in assists.

24. Princeton Tigers

Next: 24.

The first-round upset of Kentucky's Rhyne Howard in last year's NCAA tournament is even more impressive now that he's playing in the NBA. In the second round, the Tigers almost knocked off Indiana. The loss of the Ivy League player of the year, who has transferred to Maryland, but the return of Julia Cunningham andKaitlyn Chen, along with a strong recruiting class, makes up for it. The tigers are favorites again.

25. Georgia Lady Dogs

In the past:

At Georgia, she brought in some core players from her Knights teams, including Diamond Battles, and also added a Texas transfer. The first year in the SEC won't be a walk in the park, but Abrahamson-Henderson has the experience and some promising players to make some noise in the conference.

The Utah Utes are also considered.
