There is a reason why the idea of EV wireless charging is gaining traction. It would end range anxiety once and for all if you Juicing up your car while you drive.

Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer is a technology that allows electric vehicles to travel over specially equipped, dedicated road lanes to charge their batteries.

What’s Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer?

The coils are placed under the pavement. The field that they emit is picked up by vehicles and converted into electricity by a receiver.

It is possible to feed energy to the electric motor and extend the vehicle's range by using road infrastructure.

Stellantis’ pilot project

There is a dedicated test track called Arena del Futuro, which isItalian for "Arena of the future".

In the video, you can see how the circuit works.

The test showed that an EV like the Fiat 500 can travel at an average highway speed. The efficiency of the energy flow from the asphalt to the car is similar to that of a fast charging station.

The success is attributed to the fact that Arena del Futuro is powered by DC.

  • It reduces power loss during the energy distribution.
  • It eliminates the need to convert DC into AC.
  • It allows the use of thinner aluminum cables for current distribution, which are easier to source and recycle, and have half the costs of copper.

The customer approach to electric mobility will be simplified and the requirements for decarbonization will be responded to in a tangible way, according to the automaker.

That's correct. The transition to electric mobility is hampered by the longer time it takes to charge an EV compared to an ICE vehicle. These concerns would be eliminated by charging while driving

It won't be easy to implement the technology. We are looking at a lot of changes and a lot of money to make that happen.

Innovative technologies could help facilitate this transition. Long waiting times at charging stations will become a thing of the past as the EV adoption matures.
