According to a new Gallup poll, voters' satisfaction with the country and federal government are at record lows compared with other years.
Only 42% of Americans approve of President Joe Biden's job performance, 18% approve of Congress' performance and 16% are satisfied with the way things are going in the U.S. according to a Gallup poll.
Americans have a negative view of the economy, with a net negative view of the economy of 32 points.
All of those metrics are at least 10 points below the average over the last four decades.
A majority of Americans approve of the president on average during election years, with a 30% congressional approval rating, 34% satisfaction with the state of the U.S. and a nine point net positive rating of the economy.
This year marks a historic low in every metric.
If the low ratings hold, the Democrats will likely lose seats in the election and their losses will be larger than usual.
There is a new date for this article. Based on data going back to 1974, Gallup found that the average number of House seats lost by a president's party during the mid-terms is around 25. Democrats lost 63 seats during Barack Obama's presidency and Republicans lost 40 seats when Americans had a positive view of Congress. Americans had a 21% approval of Congress, 22% satisfaction with the U.S. and a 31 point net- negative view of the economy that year.
The Democrats will do well in the elections. Republicans only need to flip five House seats to gain control of the chamber, and one seat in the Senate, which is now evenly split. The GOP will likely have a comfortable governing majority based on current trends.
Things could change before the election. Recent polling suggests that if the Supreme Court overturns Wade and allows states to ban abortion, it will help the Democrats get more votes. Gallup notes that polling shows most Americans favor stricter gun measures and thus could motivate them to vote against Republicans who oppose them in the wake of mass shootings.
Biden has seen his approval ratings plummet in recent months, with a FiveThirtyEight analysis finding 39.7% approve of him on average, the lowest share at any point during his presidency The president's approval rating has not gone over 50% in over a year. According to a FiveThirtyEight analysis, 45% of Americans prefer to vote for a Republican candidate in November compared to 42% who would vote for a Democratic candidate. According to a Morning Consult/Politico poll from May, Republicans were more enthusiastic about voting than Democrats, even after a draft opinion was leaked suggesting the Supreme Court will overturn abortion rights.
The usual midterm indicators are unfavorable for Democrats.
Biden's approval rating hit a record low.
Do voters want Democrats or Republicans in congress? Thirty eight.
A poll suggests that abortion will affect Americans' votes more than ever.
