It's nothing new that there's controversy overTesla's autopilot function. There have been a number of fatal crashes involving the feature.

A bombshell report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's investigation into autopilot safety could change that.

According to the report, records show that the self-driving feature of the car had "aborted vehicle control less than one second before the first impact"

In spite of an ongoing government probe that provides much more advanced self-driving capabilities,Tesla has been able to avoid legal accountability regarding Autopilot and Full Self- Driving.

Current autopilot features require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomously, according to the carmaker.

The NHTSA findings may cause enough skepticism about the tech to warrant a recall. The probe found that in four of the 16 crashes, the car did not provide audio and visual warnings to the driver before the crash.

The probe claims that the approach to the first responders scene would have been visible to the driver an average of 8 seconds before the collision.

The electric car manufacturer is having a difficult year, with a massive round of layoffs, phantom braking reports, and now a government inquiry that may result in an embarrassing recall. It's not clear what will come of the NHTSA investigation, but it's safe to say that we have a bad feeling about it.
