Monkeypox is a disease that can be spread through close contact. There are a number of symptoms, including a rash which can look like a disease. The disease can be fatal, but most people recover on their own within a few weeks. The discovery of the disease in Europe and North America alarmed scientists. Monkeypox can be found in parts of Africa where it is believed to be harbored by rodents, and it can also be found outside of Africa. The number of monkeypox cases outside of Africa, along with genetic data, suggest that the virus may have been circulating for longer than thought.

There is no vaccine that can be used against monkeypox in Europe. Smallpox, one of history's biggest killers that was eradicated through a global vaccine campaign, is similar to monkeypox and treatments and vaccines developed for it are also effective against it. The US and Canada have approved the vaccine for monkeypox, though it is only approved for Europe.
