A couple turned an old shed in Texas into a tiny home. The homeowner says they spent $16,000 on the renovation. The farmhouse-style kitchen is where Krebs likes to stay.
An old shed that used to belong to Michael's grandparents caught the attention of his wife, who was looking for a place to call her own.
The Krebs had been renting for a long period of time. Since they were getting older and had two daughters, they decided it was time to find their own home.
They didn't have to travel a long way to find the solution.
Michael's grandparents gave 70 acres of land to the couple. There is a rundown shed on the property.
"We thought the shed was the perfect thing to fix up and make into a tiny home, where we could live while saving up some money so we can have money for the forever house," she said.
They plan to live in the tiny home until they have enough money to buy the main house.
It wasn't easy. The shed was built in the 80's and was being used as a storage space. The paint was peeling and there was no plumbing.
Krebs had big plans for the shed.
I've been enamored with tiny homes for a long time. I used to like to watch tiny home shows on TV. It was like a dream when my husband brought me to see the old shed.
The couple took on most of the renovation work themselves with a tight budget.
The internal walls of the shed were dismantled after they cleaned up the leftover items.
The insulation was in great shape even after the walls and ceiling were taken off. The original flooring was in great condition, so we were able to keep it.
Three windows used to be in the shed. The couple wanted to let in more natural light.
New vinyl windows were put in after the old ones were popped out.
The living room and kitchen area were vaulted.
The couple gave the roof a coat of paint to protect it from the elements.
The outside walls of the shed were painted.
The shed was old and the paint was dry-rotting so we had to remove it.
They tried to reuse material that was already on the property.
The beam we put in was found in an old barn on the property. The wood was taken off and used as the ceiling.
The front door of their new home was made into a barn door.
I put a window in the door because it was in such good shape. Krebs did not paint it. It was perfect for the tiny house.
They wanted to change the orientation of the building so they moved the entrance on the back side.
She said that they covered the old entrance and cut a hole in the front of the building to install the new door.
The biggest challenge the couple faced was partitioning the space into separate rooms with new walls.
They needed to agree on a floor plan. The couple separated the two rooms from the kitchen and living area to create a single bedroom and bathroom.
The dirty work was done after they got that out of the way.
To figure out how to do this, we looked on the internet. We did all the framing ourselves with our two girls by our side. My husband knew what he was doing.
Krebs had always wanted a porch in her family home and the couple built one.
She said that the porch gave the house a hundred more square feet. Even if it rains, the girls can play outside. It's a nice place to hang out in the evenings.
Family and friends helped whenever they could.
The renovation took nine months.
In September of 2020 we began and ended in May of 2021. She said it was a fun project with her family and friends helping out.
The couple did not get an electrical company to link the house up, but they did the rest of the wiring themselves.
Krebs has over nine thousand followers on her TikTok account.
They spent about $16,000, which was within their budget.
She said that they were able to complete it before the price went up.
The couple didn't run into any supply-chain issues even though they renovated.
"We reuse a lot of the old lumber and other materials that we already had lying around so it wasn't that bad to build the home during the Pandemic," she said.
There are three rooms in the tiny home.
The living room is on the right side when you walk through the main door. There is a doorway that goes into the bedroom and then into the bathroom.
There is a closet behind a curtain in the bathroom.
While my husband built the closet area, my husband's cousin tiled the shower in about a week.
The main house on the property was connected to the tiny home's new sewage system.
We don't have a place where everyone sleeps because we have one full-sized bed and a couch that folds out into a bed.
She said that on some nights it could be her and her daughters in the main bedroom and on other nights it could be out on the couch.
While this flexible sleeping arrangement works for her and her family, it has been criticized by other social-media users.
I get a few hate comments about where my kids sleep and I'm okay with that. I am sure they are safe. She said that they have a bed. It's not permanent, people will have their own room in the big house in the future.
The farmhouse-style kitchen is where Krebs likes to stay.
You don't have to spend a lot of money to get a kitchen like that. I wanted a farmhouse sink, and I could have them in my small house. It's possible to live a nice lifestyle and still live small.
If you want to do the same thing as Krebs, draw out all the floor plans before you start.
The locations of electrical outlets and light fixture are included.
We wanted our AC in the bedroom but it was in the living room. She said that the big galvanized piping in the front of the house set the plan back. It's definitely a reminder to have everything drawn out before you start, even though I didn't like it initially.
The family has lived in the house for a year. It has been a rewarding experience for all of them.
They don't stay out of the house every day because they downsize on a lot of toys. She said that it's nice for them to be outside to explore because they have their own chickens, cows, pigs, and dogs.
