The US and its NATO and European allies have sent tens of billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine.

The Ukrainians have received assistance from both the public and private sectors. One of the most notable contributions has been that of Starlink.

The company says it has delivered 15000 Starlink kits to Ukranian. The Ukrainian military uses the devices to communicate. Ukrainian civilians have used the system to stay in touch with family and friends outside of the country, while Ukrainian troops have used them to coordinate attacks.

The Ukrainian troops in Mariupol had a device called a Starlink that allowed them to communicate with the world.

There are other companies that provide the same services, but they don't have the same strength. A new generation of satellites that work as a constellation are used by Starlink.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was quoted as saying that Starlink has been effective. The blockade of our cities, towns, and occupied territory helped us a lot. Sometimes we couldn't communicate with those places.

In occupied cities without access to Starlink, Russians have told civilians thatUkraine no longer existed as a country, but those tactics haven't been successful on a large scale because of Starlink.

Russian President Vladimir Putin's information campaign has been destroyed by Ukrainians' access to Starlink.

The Ukrainian government asked Starlink to counter Russian cyberattacks.

Viasat, a US satellite communications company that provided communication services to the Ukrainian military, was attacked by Moscow in the hours before the invasion began. "Acid Rain" was a "wiper" that was designed to destroy Viasat modems and routers before disabling them.

The inability of Ukrainian commanders to communicate with each other in the first hours of the conflict could have been catastrophic. Russia has increased its jamming and hacking attempts against Starlink.

What do they tell young officers in training? The radio is your main weapon. A soldier assigned to the US Army National Guard told Insider that they are not there to kick down doors and be the first man in the room.

All the way up to the commander-in-chief, that concept applies. The operator, who was not authorized to speak to the media, said good comms is everything.

The value of a distributed satellite communications network was shown by the cyberattack on Viasat.

It's important to have a distributed and resilient satellite network in modern warfare. Commercial satellite communications have been used on battlefields in the past.

The military is looking at ways to disrupt those systems. In a paper published in May, Chinese military researchers called for the development of soft and hard kill methods to destroy the whole constellation of Starlink satellites in the event of a conflict.

The whole system needs some low-cost, high-efficiency measures to counter Starlink.

The military and intelligence agencies play an important role in protecting the US satellite networks. The goal of the division of labor is to shut it down.

The means by which Chinese generals talk to each other is likely to be the focus of US Cyber Command, which is responsible for the military's cyberspace operations.

Operators of the cyber command want to understand the networks themselves. They don't pay much attention to what's being said on that network. According to a former US intelligence officer with a background in signals intelligence, they just want to know that the network is being used.

The National Security Agency, the US's premier signals intelligence collector, would be more focused on what is being transmitted. Intelligence officers would like to know what Chinese generals are saying.

"High-level signals intelligence is the most closely held, and there are very few people who have access to that because it's highly technical, complex information that requires a lot of analysis," a former intelligence officer said.
