Digital license plates allow Michigan drivers to locate lost vehicles and get public safety notifications for a fee. Michigan residents and businesses will now be able to purchase the device online from Reviver. A battery-powered plate and a hard-wired plate include gps. The company wants to make the plates available nationwide.

A digital license plate is something to ask about. A number of security and personalization features are included in the RPlate, which is basically a license plate with an HD display. Drivers can choose between dark and light modes, and personalize their messages at the bottom of the screen. Telematic transponders are included in the gps-enabled plate so it can locate a lost or stolen vehicle and send an alert to your phone. Drivers can use the companion mobile app to track mileage and renew their registration online.

There are a couple of security features that could be too much for some people. There's a "Valet parking" mode that lets you monitor your car remotely while it is being parked by a valet attendant and a "geofencing" option for family members or employees who drive the car that sends an alert if they violate the travel boundaries.

Digital license plates are expensive. If you choose to have a professional install the plate, you'll have to pay an additional $150. Integration with toll roads is one of the new features the company is working on.
