Russia has a McDonald's.

More than a dozen Mcdonald's locations opened under new ownership over the weekend.

"Vkusno & tochka" is the new name for Mcdonald's. Thousands of people lined up for the original McDonald's opening in 1990 but the crowds on opening day were much smaller. The reversal of what brought McDonald's to the Russian market is one of the reasons why the outlets are now rebranded.

The story is titled "Evgenia Novozhenina."

The new chain can't use Mcdonald's logos or menu, and this shows how much control Mcdonald's has over the new outlets. Alexander Govor, the new owner of McDonald's, will have to keep some 60,000 employees for at least two years, along with other restrictions.

"We don't have the right to use some colors, we don't have the right to use the golden arches, and we don't have the right to use any mention of Mcdonald's."

The fast-food giant decided to leave Russia in the wake of the Russian-Ukraine war. McDonald's sold its Russian business, which makes up 2% of its global footprint, to Govor, a businessman who made his wealth co-owning a coal mining company in his hometown. He has been a McDonald's franchisee for three years. He paid less than the market price for 850 Mcdonald's locations in Russia. Gover may have gotten help from Sovcombank.

The company plans to open 200 restaurants in Russia by the end of June and 850 by the end of the year.
