The United Arab Emirates banned the Lightyear Pixar film from theaters over reports of the movie including a reported kiss between two female characters, the latest in a growing trend of Disney movies being banned due to their depiction of LGBTQ characters.
The film won't be shown in the country due to its violation of the country's media content standards
There was a doctored image of a red no sign over the movie poster that was used for the violation.
The Toy Story spin-off will feature a relationship between one of the film's main characters and another female character, according to Variety.
The film will not be shown in Malaysia and Saudi Arabia according to Variety.
According to reports, Pixar's Onward was banned in March 2020 due to its depiction of a gay character. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Eternals wasn't shown in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait orQatar because of its depiction of a gay relationship. Variety reported that West Side Story was banned by six Gulf countries due to the inclusion of a trans character. An official from the country said Saudi Arabia hadn't yet banned the film but was in a dispute with Disney over removing the content.
The kiss in question was cut from Lightyear but later restored after Pixar employees accused Disney of censoring "overtly gay affection" in films.
