The broadcast rights for the upcoming five-year cycle of the Indian premier league have been sold for $5 billion, making it one of the most valuable sporting entities in the world.
The TV rights for each game are worth $7.37 million and the digital broadcast rights are worth $6.15 million.
The digital rights have reportedly been snatched up by a joint venture between Paramount and TV 18.

The NFL's 11-year deal is believed to rake in an average of $36 million per game, making it the second largest sports league in the world after the NBA.
The league's organizers are yet to auction off two other packages, one of which includes supplementary digital rights for a set of around 18 marquee games, and another which covers the TV and digital rights.

In the past few years, Disney has promoted the Indian cricket team as a marquee property on its Disney+ streaming service. Amazon pulled out of the bidding process after showing initial interest.

When the league launched with eight teams, it had an average value of only 67 million dollars. The economic model that guarantees profitability for the teams was one of the reasons for the surge in valuation of the teams.

According to a real-time tracker by Forbes, Mumbai Indians owner Mukesh Ambani is India's richest man and the sixth richest in the world with a net worth of almost $100 billion. A sports team is owned by the world's richest man.
