The FDA said the three doses appeared to be effective in preventing illness in the age group.

Pfizer's three-dose regimen was found to be effective in preventing Covid illness in children under the age of five.

Moderna's vaccine was found to be safe and effective for use in children under the age of six.

The efficacy in preventing illness was reported to be less than 50% by Moderna.

Only 10 participants in the placebo and vaccine groups reported illness, which is below the threshold required to accurately determine efficacy.

The vaccine trials may not have been comparable as they were carried out at different times.

Pfizer and Moderna have different approaches to their vaccines. Pfizer uses three shots each with a tiny 3 g dose, which is a tenth of the size of the shots given to adults. A quarter of the vaccine given to adults is used in Moderna's vaccine for young children. The second Pfizer dose is given three weeks after the first and is followed by a third shot at least eight weeks later. There are two Moderna doses.

What To Watch For

After analyzing data from both vaccine makers on Wednesday, an independent panel of experts will give a recommendation to the FDA. The FDA is expected to make a decision on the use of the two shots for the youngest group of Americans shortly after the meeting. According to the New York Times, parents may be able to choose which vaccine their children are given. After the FDA's decision, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will give its recommendations.

Last week, anticipating FDA approval, the Biden administration outlined its vaccine plan for children under the age of five, which included ordering 10 million additional vaccine doses. If the FDA and CDC approve the use of the vaccines this week, the White House will be ready to roll out the vaccine by June 20. The White House expects millions more to be made available in the weeks to come. In addition to delivering the vaccine doses, the White House plans to make authoritative and trustworthy information about the vaccines more easily available to parents. According to a survey conducted in April by the Kaiser Family Foundation, only 18% of parents plan to give their kids a vaccine immediately after the shot is approved.

Surprising Fact

Despite the belief that the fast-spreading variant causes less severe disease, the omicron wave resulted in a four-fold increase in hospitalization for children. The rise in the number of hospitalizations for children under the age of five has been caused by the delta variant.
