Hutchinson thinks that Donald Trump is responsible for the Capitol riot.

The first public hearing held by the House panel investigating the events of the January 6, 2021.

The governor told the outlet that he thought Trump was responsible for the riot, but he wasn't sure if he would be charged with a crime.

"You can make the case that he's morally responsible for a lot of what has happened, but in terms of criminal liability, the committee has a long way to go," he said.

He said he hoped the GOP would act differently in the future because he thought Trump made a mistake with his response to the riot.

He hopes that the future of the Republican Party is different than the current one. I hope we don't follow the same path. I believe that the events of January 6 are at his feet.

According to Hutchinson, many Republicans were looking for an off-ramp where Trump's leadership was concerned.

There are a lot of things that President Trump did that I agree with, but he got off track on January 6 and that was a costly error for our democracy.

Republicans have a lot of soul-searching to do, chiefly with regard to doing what's right for the party's future and America's democracy, and not just appealing to the "instincts of some of our base."

Hutchinson dislikes the leadership of the GOP.

Hutchinson told Insider that he didn't think Trump should lead the US again. The governor said that Trump's fixation on voter fraud in the 2020 election was a recipe for disaster.

In February, Hutchinson warned against letting Trump "define" the GOP and said he wouldn't back the latter's re- election bid.

The second hearing of the January 6 committee will be held on Monday. According to the members of the panel, there is enough evidence to indict Trump for trying to change the outcome of the presidential election.
