Klay is trying to stay in the moment. The Golden State Warriors star didn't want to think about Monday's pivotal Game 5 of the NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics. He tried to stay locked in on what he needed to do and what he didn't want to do.
He allowed himself to escape the present. He didn't see the future. He looked behind him.
Thompson tore his knee in the 6th game of the NBA finals against the Raptors. He didn't know it at the time, but the last game he played was that one.
Wow, that's a long time. Thompson thought back to that time three years ago. A reporter pointed it out to him that tomorrow is the three-year anniversary. Wow, that!" It just keeps going by.
Thompson went back to the Warriors' hallway for a while after he tore his knee. He reloaded and took two free throws.
Thompson wanted to leave the points on the board. It's the finals. I am going to get this ball.
When he tried to run down the court on the next play, it became obvious he needed to leave the game.
Thompson said that he didn't think it was that serious. I thought I may have injured my knee. When you're in the championship and you're playing in front of our fans, you kind of ignore anything that makes sense, and running around on a tornACL doesn't make very good sense.
Shortly before the 2020-21 season, Thompson tore his right Achilles' heel and was just starting to run again. Thompson didn't like watching last year's Finals because it was too painful.
Thompson doesn't seem to run too hot or cold. He kicked chairs on the sideline when he couldn't help his teammates or sat on the bench for an hour after the final buzzer of a game with a towel draped over his head.
The end of an era is marked by this three-year anniversary. They wanted to win a three-peat championship. KD wore a Golden State jersey for the final time. They played their last game at the arena. A mini rebuild began for the organization.
Stephen Curry said, "To think it's three years ago and all that we've been through, all that Klay has been through personally since that time, and to be back here, it adds a sense of gratitude." It will always be a part of our journey. We'll probably talk about that for a while. Hopefully, we can get this job done and pay homage to the journey that led to something really special.
The Warriors have a chance to achieve that goal if they win on Monday. Golden State is not looking too far in the future. "One game at a time" has been their motto since the start of the season, and they have learned that anything can happen.
Will the Warriors reflect on their journey?
Thompson said it might be for a second. When I step on that court, I want to win as much as possible. I don't care what it looks like. We need to protect our home court. I will not be singing 'Kumbaya'. I don't want to lose.
