Two challenges were part of the Cruise competition. In the first, the six competing cruise bartenders had to present an original cocktail to the judges, created by using one of the topics that had been covered in this year's World Class Studios training modules.
One of the challenges was using plants with roots. They had to make their own syrup and build a cocktail with Don Julio tequila. In the Culture Club/Seasonality module, the bartender had to preserve and include an agricultural ingredient that meant something to them in a cocktail.
Virgin Voyages is one of the newest cruise lines.
Ketel One vodka was included in the two other modules. In Home Brew, the cocktail had to be inspired by a community home brew and Ketel One. The Cocktail maker had to recognize that bars, pubs, cafés and restaurants are important community gathering places. They had to create a cocktail that benefited their local community either through direct financial gains or purchases of local ingredients.
One of the three judges gave feedback after each of the six competitors created three serves. Four people went on to the second challenge. Four people were given seven minutes to create two original cocktails that represented two different countries.
The commentary that accompanied the preparation of the cocktail was an important part of each presentation. Pacheco's first cocktail was based on the legend of a famous ship that was wrecked hundreds of years ago. It had been full of treasures. His cocktail had a selection of the spices that had been lost.
Pacheco makes drinks from Mezcal. He was part of the team that launched the Mexican restaurant, Pink Agave, with the largest tequila and mezcal library on the planet.
