Meta was slammed with eight lawsuits in various states by a law firm.
Meta is not only exploitative of young people for profit, but also made its platforms psychologically addictive and failed to protect its users, according to a statement released by the firm.
The leaked documents that show how the platform knew it was "toxic" for teenage girls is cited by Allen as well as the testimony by Facebook whistle-blowers.
According to the statement, the defendants knew that their products and services were dangerous to young and impressionable children and teens. It was designed to encourage frequent access to the platforms and to expose them to harmful content.
Birchfield said that the people behind these platforms made a decision to aggressively addict adolescents in the name of corporate profits. He said it was time for Meta to address the concerns.
The concerns are quite large. Mental health issues like anxiety, depression, and eating disorders have been linked to platform use.
It's not clear what will come out of these lawsuits, but they're the latest scrutiny Meta has faced.
