Andonov gained attention due to his involvement in Russia's invasion of Ukraine and annexation of Crimea.

He is said to have been part of a unit that liberated the town of Logvinovo, where three Ukrainian prisoners of war were killed.

According to the website Peacemaker, Andonov boasted that there were no survivors among the "dills" in an interview about the mission in 2015.

He was a mercenary for a Russian military company that has been accused of committing war crimes and using brutal methods in other countries.

He spent some years out of the public eye and was rumored to have been deployed to Syria and Libya.

Last year, a survivor of a massacre in the town of Espia, Libya said he believed Andonov was one of the attackers that killed his family.

Hromadske said that Ukrainian officials claimed that their forces destroyed a military base in the eastern Luhansk region and killed 22 people.
