  • I relocated to South Carolina in 2020. I'm coming back home.

  • South Carolina's strict marijuana laws weren't good for me.

  • There is nothing quite like New York in the South.

Most of my life has been spent in upstate New York. I moved to South Carolina at the beginning of the coronaviruses epidemic in 2020 to be close to my family.

I lived in the South for two years and I don't think it's a good place for me.

Las Vegas was the furthest south I had ever resided. This was only for two years after high school, so it has been a huge change.

After leaving South Carolina and returning to upstate New York, I decided to break down a few of the reasons I left.

I find the intense heat and humidity to be unbearable

I'll get roasted for being a Northerner, but it's hot down here. Not in a good way.

I have a hunch that it's only going to get worse because of climate change.

It was almost unbearable to leave the house between May and October after my second summer in South Carolina.

I mean it when I say it's unbearable. It feels like someone threw a wet towel over my face as I stepped outside.

My hair and makeup don't stay in place. I don't like the idea of being a swamp goblin in the summer.

I'm leaving the kitchen because I can't handle the heat.

The bugs in South Carolina are out of my weight class

I can handle a lot of animals in the South. Some of them are enjoyable.

I can't tolerate the bugs.

I've never been attacked by insects like the ones I've seen in South Carolina. The bugs are large. I could be taken down in a fight.

Banana spiders, mole crickets, palmetto bugs, millipedes, and centipedes have all been encountered in South Carolina.

When I'm outside, these creatures like to dive-bomb my face.

I would fight a subway rat over these bugs if I lived in New York or South Carolina.

Going from a blue state to a red state has been rough

New York is a state that generally votes Democratic in elections.

It has been a bit of a culture shock to move to a state where most of the officials have political views and morals that I don't agree with.

There are huge swaths of the region that are beautifully diverse and desperately underrepresented despite the fact that there is a lot of racism and white supremacy.

South Carolina's mostly conservative elected officials aren't representative of all the people who live here.

I want to be able to buy weed, which is still illegal in many Southern states

It's bad to be a stoner in a state where cannabis is not legal.

Marijuana was legalized in New York in 2021. Many Southern states don't have similar cannabis laws.

It wasn't an option to drive to a neighboring state to buy weed. Marijuana is illegal in all three of them.

Marijuana is not allowed in certain Southern states. They disproportionately affect people of color. I don't want to live in a state that makes them enforce them.

There is a legal loophole in the US that allows me to legally buy a cannabis compound that gives me a "high".

I would like to see cannabis legalized for medical and recreational use in the South.

I miss having access to different vegan foods

Access to vegan food is dependent on where a person lives in the South.

I don't want to make the whole region a vegan-food desert, but if you want to eat vegan, you have to go to Atlanta.

You're probably out of luck if you're a vegan who's moving to a small town.

There weren't many vegan options close to my family's home.

I didn't miss the luxury of being able to order a vegan breakfast sandwich on a Saturday morning, even though I cooked all of my meals at home.

When it comes down to it, there's really no place like New York

It is one of the most diverse places in the world.

The harsh winters are a small price to pay for the beautiful autumns.

Red, orange, yellow, and purple are some of the colors of the Adirondaks. If you know, the smell of the fall air in New York is the closest thing to real magic that I have ever experienced.

I will not pretend that the south is not beautiful.

I have been sane over the last two years because of the beauty here. I am ready to return to my hometown.

I can't wait to wear a pair of boots and a sweater, put on my headphones, and go for a walk without having to do that polite Southern wave.

I will always do it because of my fear of being rude to people that will always take precedence over my need to be left alone. I don't like it. A large amount.

I want to walk in peace, and I can always count on my fellow New Yorkers.

It's time for me to come back to South Carolina.
