Laura Waring needed to fly from Newark, New Jersey, to San Diego to help set up her company's conference, which was scheduled to start the next Monday.

Waring slept for 45 minutes on a cot at the Newark airport after her flight was repeatedly delayed and canceled.

It was the beginning of her problems.

Waring's experience will likely be the same among people flying in the coming months. There were more than 20,000 delays and 2,800 cancelations over the Memorial Day weekend.

The experts think that it's an early indicator of a turbulent summer travel season because of a pilot shortage, increased consumer demand, a recent rise in fuel prices, and disagreements over which Covid-19 restrictions should remain in place.

Matthew Howe, senior manager of travel intelligence at Morning Consult, said that they are seeing a lot of revenge travel. Some airlines may be struggling to meet the demand.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of airline pilots and engineers went down from 84,520 to 81,310 in May 2019. According to the bureau, the country will need more than 14,000 new pilots in the next 10 years.

The Regional Airline Association stated in its annual report that work force shortages have been accelerated for technicians and pilots who have been entering the career in fewer numbers than those retiring.

Michael Taylor, a consumer research firm's practice lead for travel intelligence, said that there will be fewer options for travelers this summer because of the shortage. Airlines used to have departures every hour for major hubs like Chicago and Atlanta. The planes will be busy because they will only happen every 90 minutes.

Taylor said that the airlines are going to redeploy a larger fleet with fewer city destinations.

Less slack in the system can be attributed to fewer flights and a lack of staff. Before the Pandemic, airlines might have had crews at an airport on stand-by in case of an unforeseen event, but they aren't doing that anymore because they need those staff on flights.

When a flight is delayed because of a storm, there may not be a substitute for the scheduled crew members who are allowed to fly a certain number of hours.

Dennis Tajer is a spokesman for the Allied Pilots Association, the union for American Airlines pilots.

Tajer said that if you have disproportionately assigned your pilots reserve duty, it will lead to a less reliable operation.

The airlines are adapting. There will be 100 daily flights canceled by Delta from 1 July to 7 August.

More than any time in our history, the various factors currently impacting our operation are resulting in an operation that isn't consistently up to the standards

After her cousin's Memorial Day weekend wedding in Minneapolis, a notification was sent to her that her Monday morning flight had been canceled. Three hours later, she was re booked.

It added stress to us having to rearrange transportation but also having backup plans on what would happen if that one also got canceled or if they over booked it.

The couple decided not to go to another wedding with Delta.

It wasn't just because of the cancellation The federal government lifted its mask requirement for people on airplanes. She wore her mask because of her family members with diseases. The Delta crew celebrated the end of the masking requirement.

People want people to wear masks. When you go to an airport, they have overhead announcements that say, 'You should be wearing a mask,' and you look around and about half the people are wearing masks.

Johnson is not the only one who has had a bad travel experience. Customer satisfaction with air travel decreased over the course of a year, according to a report.

The change is attributed to the increase in passengers.

There are only 10 people on a plane and it is great. It is different when there are 220 people on it.

The price of her round-trip ticket to Minneapolis went from $297 in May to $578 in July. The average US round trip ticket price in April was $585, which was the highest in seven years.

With tickets being as high as they are, with inflationary pressures hitting people's budgets, people are really expecting airlines to perform and deliver the services that they have promised.

13 hours after she was supposed to leave, Waring was able to leave Newark on a United Airlines flight.

The flight was to Los Angeles. She didn't have her luggage on the flight. She had to go to a Target to buy clothes because she had to drive two hours to San Diego. The bag's handle broke when she got it. She kept the receipts and hoped the airline would reimburse her.

Waring said that they were able to prepare for the conference and that it went well.

She is going to fly with United in August to take a family vacation.

The bad experience won't stop me from booking a flight. It is important to have a good size carry on that has some essentials in there.
