The Ilyushin Il-76 is a multi-purpose, fixed-wing, four- engine strategic airlifter. It was originally intended as a commercial ship.

SilkWay Ilyushin IL-76TD-90 was used to fly me to Erbil, Iraq. It was a huge undertaking.

About IL-76TD-90

I took a picture with the airmen. 2 pilots, a flight engineer, a radio controller, and a navigator were involved in the operation. A loadmaster and two technicians are also on the flight.

There are new stage 4 noise compliant engines in this particular IL-76TD-90. It is capable of flying to any airport with better performance.

The cockpit was different from the Western plane. The cockpit has been altered.

Climb up to the top of the IL-76 through its escape hatch door is one of the highlights before you leave. The size of the wingspan was huge.

The captain and loadmaster showed off the cockpit and cargo cabin.

There is a crane system and ramp system inside the cabin that can be used in remote airfields.

Loadmaster Jeyhun is ready for the cargo mission. We carried just 20 tons of cargo on pallets. The capacity of IL-76 is about 50 tons.

The Flight to Erbil, Iraq

Two pilots, a flight engineer and a radio controller are sitting in the upper deck.

A navigator is sitting on the lower deck.

Loadmaster has its own station as well.

I flew to Erbil for 2.5 hours. The IL-76TD-90 flies at high altitudes.

The cruise was over 30 thousand feet. 1.6 tons per engine is how much fuel was burned at the cruise. As pilots don't use paper charts anymore, it's interesting to see two iPad holders on top.

There is a takeoff on my video.

The Perm PS90 engines are in the picture.

From the navigator's office, the view is the best.

We entered Iran and headed towards Iraq. Gradually, the landscape became desert.

We were put on hold when we were 3rd on approach. Clouds and thermals covered Erbil. There were more than one plane that was landing before us.

I was watching the landing on my video.

Erbil to Baku

We did not spend a lot of time on the ground. The cargo was unloaded through the rear ramp and a high loader. We flew home empty after dropping off the cargo.

The engine took about eight minutes to start. The 2 technicians will communicate with the cockpit when the engine starts. Once the engine starts, they get inside the plane and close the door.

The IL-76TD-90 does not require an engine warm-up on the runway.

The long runway end is visible from the glass nose of IL-76 as we took off.

I eat my lunch in the cabin with a big smile. It was the internal satisfaction of flying the IL-76 that made me feel good.

I was able to experience a flight on the IL-76 and it made me very happy. The unique operation of this transporter is something I am happy to show off. Many air missions have been supported by the IL-76.
