An Air Force review suggested that the red, white and blue design for the new generation of presidential aircraft would raise costs and delay its delivery.

The Air Force One callsign will be given to two Boeing 747-800 aircraft that are being modified, when the president takes over. The new jumbo jets were ordered by Trump to have a deeper navy and red color.

An administration official who spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to discuss the program said that the Trump paint scheme was not being considered because it could drive additional engineering.

The dark shade of blue Trump proposed for the plane's underside would have caused heating issues for the aircraft, requiring costly redesigns and additional delays to the already behind-schedule program. The first plane to carry a president was the current generation.

Trump kept a mock up of the new plane on a coffee table in the Oval Office.

He told Fox News that the baby blue doesn't fit with the plane's design.

Trump used the colors of the American flag. The top half of the plane would be white while the bottom half would be blue. A red stripe would streak from the cockpit to the midsection, almost identical to the color scheme on Trump's personal plane.

The replacement aircraft are currently at a Boeing plant in San Antonio undergoing extensive modifications to prepare them to carry the president. They have a simple white and blue paint job going on.

The new aircraft are expected to be years behind schedule.
