It was supposed to be England's revenge game after they lost on penalties to Italy in the Euro 2020 final, but ended with the Three Lions failing to score for the third game in a row.
The only goal England have scored in the Nations League so far is Harry Kane's late penalty against Germany, and the captain was given a break for this one.
Tammy Abraham was given a chance to establish himself as the man to take on some of the goal scoring burden, despite England controlling the game for large parts.
It was a quiet occasion because the game was played behind closed doors.
"Controlling games doesn't guarantee goals and if you don't score you end up open to criticism, as I am sure we will be," said the England manager.
We weren't able to win the game. There were two or three very good chances for us.
You don't get a lot of chances against the top level teams. Given the amount of possession we had, we would have liked to have created more.
The message from the England players was that they are not too worried about this current barren spell, and had Mason Mount kept his effort below the bar instead of striking it, the topic wouldn't have dominated the post- match aftermath.
"The last few games we haven't scored enough goals but we got to a World Cup semi-final playing this way and we were a penalty shootout away from winning a Euros in our home country," he said.
Everyone is behind us for the World Cup and we are doing our best to improve.
It is frustrating because we want to win and score goals. We had a few other chances and I think I should have done better with my chances. It's a positive that we're keeping clean sheets, but we have to work on it.
There are times when it is difficult. We need to keep working hard in training. The players have the talent and quality to do that.
Kane has scored 50 goals for his country, while the rest of the squad have 49.
The concern is if you don't have him for whatever reason, and that's what Spurs are worried about.
The captain's goal scoring record is amazing. The load has to be shared by us. There are players who score a lot with their club and have to move to international football. We have to keep trying to get them into those areas.
As a result of his 27 goals in all competition, Abraham is thought to be Kane's back-up, with the likes of Watkins, Calvert-Lewin and Wilson also thought to be in the mix.
Abraham couldn't finish his chance in the opening minutes of the game.
There is a big gap between Kane and everyone else. Tammy has put himself in this position, but he is trying to adapt to international football.
Tammy has had a good game. He will be calling for the ball earlier because he has had very little service.
Matthew Upson said they need to rediscover their goal scoring touch if they are to win the World Cup.
He said on 5 Live that he thinks a lot of it is mentality. "If you look at some of the chances missed tonight, it is often about being more aggressive and more decisive when you are on the field."
"It doesn't have to be pretty, it doesn't have to be elaborate, but you want to see that edge, and I just don't see it right now." There is a ruthless edge that is going to win games and tournaments. It isn't there.
The Italians think that England are one of the teams to be in the World Cup.
The boss said that they are one of the best teams in Europe. There are a lot of good players. They are trying new things. They are one of the favorites to win the world cup.
Italy legend Alessandro del Piero thinks that England must be more cautious.
The final touch is what determines whether or not a team is a winning one. You need to score when you have that chance.
