The city of St. is located in the northeastern part of the United States The richest tournament in golf history was won by Schwartzel.

The $4 million prize for the individual victory, along with $750,000 from his share of the $3 million purse earned by his four-man team for topping the team rankings, was secured by Schwartzel after he held on for a 1-shot victory at the inaugural LIV Golf invitational series event outside London

Schwartzel collected more prize money from winning the Augusta National event than he had in the previous four years combined. He resigned his membership of the PGA Tour in order to play on the unsanctioned series.

"Never in my wildest dreams did I think we could make that much money playing golf," said Schwartzel.

South Africa's Hennie Du Plessis, who was selected for Stinger by team captain Louis Oosthuizen in the draft, earned $2.875 million by finishing second.

Schwartzel entered the final day with a 3-shot lead and did just enough to hold off Du Plessis.

The first event of the inaugural year of LIV golf was against the backdrop of the PGA Tour banning players who signed up. The European tour hasn't commented on the sanctions for players who jumped to the series without permission.

Patrick Reed became the 20th player to defect from the PGA Tour as the final round was being completed.

The rewards for joining the series funded by Saudi Arabia's wealth fund have not been enough to entice players in the top 10.
