Fresh challenges to Microsoft's lucrative Windows business may be posed by Apple's new laptops.

The company's computer business has been picking up steam since Apple started selling Macs powered by the M1 processor. The new MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro will be the first to feature the M2.

The new chip will have more transistors and bandwidth.

Apple could continue picking up market share with the M2 architecture according to Mikako Kitagawa. In 2021, Apple held 7.9% of worldwide PC shipments, while Windows held 81.8%. The firm predicts that Apple's share will go up to 10.7% in the year 206.

An updated forecast that will make Apple's performance look stronger is coming soon.

The revival of Apple's Mac business can be traced back to new devices with the company's own chips. Last year saw the release of the MacBook Air, followed by updated models of the iMac, Mac Mini, and MacBook Pro laptop, and a new model for power users called Mac Studio.

Older Intel-based devices have less processing power than Apple's newer ones.

There has been a surge in sales. Apple sold over $35 billion of Macintosh computers in the fiscal year that ended in March. Mac sales increased more quickly than any other Apple category in the March quarter. The incredible customer response to our M1 powered Macs helped propel a 15% year over year increase in revenue despite supply constraints.

It isn't good news for Microsoft.

Most of Microsoft's revenue comes from the licenses it sells to device makers. Morgan Stanley analysts wrote in a note this week that Microsoft's total revenue and gross profit is almost 10% of the total.

A lot of pricing control is lost in the marketplace as a result of Microsoft losing market share.

Commercial customers make up the majority of revenue from Windows licenses. Apple is making headway among consumers and he learned during his nine years at Microsoft that there is a correlation between consumer use and what happens at work.

Corporate leaders who make technology buying decisions are more likely to adopt a different product set in their home environments once they start using a different product set in their home environments.

He said he would like an M2 machine in the future after he switched to a Mac. He said that all of his company's employees use Macs.

Concerns that key applications wouldn't be compatible slowed the adoption of Apple's M1 computer. Kitagawa said that Adobe, Microsoft and other developers have started to release native versions of their software for the devices.

Patrick Moorhead, CEO of industry research company Moor Insights and Strategy, said Windows PCs could one day match Apple's latest Macs. It is closer between Apple andAMD than it is between Apple and Intel according to Moorhead.

Apple could offer cheaper computers. The starting price for Apple's upcoming M2 MacBook Air is $1,199. It would be similar to what Apple has done with the iPhone SE, a budget phone that lacks some of the newest features.

Moorhead said that a lower priced MacBook would disrupt Windows.

Microsoft didn't reply to the request.
