It was reported in January that Madrid were looking at options to improve their midfield. The chief scout of Madrid went to Monaco in the month of June to look for a deal.

The Monaco deal was held up by Spain's classification of the Principality of Monaco as a tax haven, meaning the club would have to pay tax on their profits.

Carlo Ancelotti wanted the club to sign a new defensiveMidfielder as a priority, and Tamenchoui was the main Candidate ahead of Ryan Gravenberch.

Los Blancos believe that Tchouameni has what it takes to be a defensiveMidfielder of the future.

Tchouameni scored three goals in 35 league appearances for Monaco as they finished third in the table.

He was named to the France squad for this month's Nations League games with Austria, Croatia, andDenmark.
