Frost Giant Studios’ debut mixes Starcraft with Diablo

The trailer for Stormgate, the first game from Frost Giant Studios, was released today. The trailer shows a glimpse of the upcoming real-time strategy.

The first look was only a tease, so I sat down with two key Frost Giant employees, writer Micky Neilson and assistant art director Jonathan Ryder, to dig into the game's history and learn how it will be different from other games.

Low-fi sci-fi

The trailer evokes the feeling of StarCraft. It's in the ghostly blue hue of a hologram, the mumble of an assistant, and the thunderous arrival of a bulky suit. The trailer mashes modern, high-resolution art with the realism of the StarCraft franchise. The Unreal Engine 5 is used to build the game.

When it comes to design and art, you should be able to tell what the function of a vehicle is by looking at it.

bulky suits of armor, pouches, and useful-yet-im perfect holograms define the human technology in Stormgate. The old-fashioned way to fly is with a rocket pack. This captures not only the feel of early titles but also the studio's inspiration, such as the Alien franchise, and 1997's cult sci-fi movie.

That doesn't mean that Frost Giant's approach is stuck in the '90s. The low-fi aesthetic is updated by guessing at the impact of more recent scientific discoveries.

The Infernals, Stormgate's distinct second group, are revealed in the trailer. The creatures bring an unexpected amount of high fantasy to the table. The speculative realism of the humans would seem to run counter to this, but Stormgate hopes to keep the Infernals grounded in logic.

There are always questions regarding magic. Is it artifacts or innate? Science and magic can come together sometimes. Is it drawing from the air to create a spell when I cast a cold spell?
